Program History Region Championships have long marked the program’s success by winning 21 such championships in the 35 seasons for which the Firebirds have been eligible. Recent success has been even more impressive capturing the last 15 consecutive region championships dating back to 1993. The Firebirds earned their first State Championship crown in 1994 with an impressive 9 - 0 win over Tucson Sunnnyside High School. The ‘94 Firebirds featured 7 players who continued on to play college and/or professional baseball including the present day Chicago White Sox starting first baseman, Paul Konerko. Since that time the program has gone on to thrive in a state that is rich in talent where baseball competition is fierce. The Firebirds have appeared in the last 11 straight state tournament semi-final games, advanced on to 6 State Championship games, and earned the State Championship crown in 6 of those 11 appearances (1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). The program has also produced over 120 players (and 60% of its seniors) who have gone on to play collegiate and/or professional baseball including 8 players that have been selected by USA Baseball (governing body of Olympic baseball in the United States) to represent their country in International World Championship competition. Chaparral players have been represented in over 20 Major League Organizations and have also enjoyed success at top universities such as Arizona, Arizona State, USC, Texas, Texas A&M, Stanford, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Houston, Virginia Tech, Pepperdine, Georgia Tech, Loyola Marymount, and many others. The consistency of the success of the program is a tribute to the outstanding young men who choose to participate and have the willingness to strive hard to develop their work ethic, hone their personal skills, and be the best they can be as individuals and as a team. The program is based on the young men who choose to be involved and their commitment has resulted in 700 varsity wins (and counting) in the 36 years that Chaparral Baseball has existed. |
